Yield (album)
Pearl Jam
m: awfuck@ix.netcom.com

Well, after buying the first four PJ albums, and frankly, being kind
of disappointed with the last two, I held off on buying Yield. But I came
home for a week and listened to my brother's copy, and I must say I think
it's a pretty solid effort. Definitely their best work since Vs. in my
humble opinion. Anyway, I thought I'd do the Internet community a favor
and transcribe the chords for the album. It's rare for me to have access
to a computer, guitar, and CD player all at once so I'm taking advantage
of this oppurtunity.

Note to beginners: Pearl Jam, like nearly all rock bands, uses the minor
pentatonic scale for almost all of their solos. If you don't know this
scale, commit it to memory. You'll be amazed at how much mileage you can
get out of this one pattern:

This is the box pattern for the minor pentatonic scale. Note that there
are two notes on each string, the first being 12 and the second being 14 or
15, so it's pretty easy to memorize. Eventually you'll want to learn the
notes of the scale up and down the whole neck, and throw in other notes,
but as I've said, just using the box pattern notes and some slides, bends,
hammer-ons, and pick-offs, you can make some pretty cool-sounding solos.
Anyway, enough theory. Time for some music. The reason I'm telling you
all this in the first place is because I'm too lazy to tab out the solos.

Track 1 (Brain of J.)

Riff 1:

                              vib slide

Who's got the brain of JFK -
What's it mean to us now?
Oh, it's not distrust,
But I can tell you this is no lie.

The whole world will be different soon
The whole world will be relieved, yeah.
The whole world will be different soon
The whole world will be relieved, yeah.

Second verse (w/ Riff 1)

Solo break: (2x)
                    vib bend

Bridge:
Then (switching every two beats instead of four, giving a
double-time feel)

Solo in minor pentatonic (7th fret box position) w/ Riff 1 (4x)

Riff 1 (2x)

Track 2 (Faithful)

 (x35533)
 (xx8866)
+9? (xx5755)
(xx9977) -- This chord is wrong I think, but it's late

             +9
/ / / / | / / / / | / / / / | / / / /

Plaque on the wall says that
No one's slept here. It's rare to
Come across a bridge that has not
Been around or been stepped on

Riff 1:
   b r

Pre-chorus (w/ Riff 1)
And echoes - nobody hears -
It goes - it goes - it goes
And echoes - nobody hears -
It goes - it goes - it goes

Chord diagrams for chorus:
 (x35533)
(I) (355433)
(II) (x 10 12 12 12 10)
 (x68886)

  (I)(I) We're faithful
  (I)(I) (II)(II)
 (x68886) We all believe
 (355433) We all believe

Bridge:

                               (II) ( (II))
   b r b r

Pre-chorus

All right, it's getting late, at this point I'm just doing chords, no
words. I'll put my email address at the end of this, and if I get much
response, I'll make this tab more complete by adding words.

Track 3 (No way)

This one is in dropped tuning. Just tune the low down a whole step to

   (for most of the song)

For the "Ooh, let's call an angel" part:
(By the way, this part definitely reminds me of Smashing Pumpkings)

-6\0-0-0-0/2-2-2-2/3-3-3-3/5-5/6-
-6\0-0-0-0/2-2-2-2/3-3-3-3/5-5/6-

Then the little guitar riff: (3x with wah-wah guitar effects)

Back to chorus

Track 4 (Given to Fly)

For the tabs and vocal melody to this song, see Led Zeppelin's Going to
California. :) (Just kidding.)
I'm sure they tune to an open chord but I was too lazy to retune my
guitar, so I faked it (pretty badly) in standard tuning.

(xxx033) with the top note moving 0()3-3-3-7-3-3-3
Then same with the tope note moving 0()3-3-3-5-3-3-3 (these
last 4 notes are on the string, not the string)
	Play this twice.
	Then (xx0235) (xx0230) sus2, and (xx0232) played
	twice.

Play this through the verses as well.

// // // /   // // // /   /   /

Track 5 (Wishlist)

Undoubtedly the simplest song on the record, but what do you expect? Eddie
Vedder is more of a singer than a guitarist.

(Slight Palm Mute)
-2-2-0-0-2-2-0-0|2-2-0-0-2-2-0-0|3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3|2-2-0-0-2-2-0-0-
-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3|3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3|3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3|3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-

Second part: (I wish the everything...)

Solo: (After "I wish I was the full moon shining off your Camaro's hood")
Stay on , then:
    , back to verse

Track 6 (Pilate)

I'm getting lazier by the moment. Tab takes a while to type in...
The intro basically uses these four chords...

Track 7 ( the Evolution)

This is the most rocking song on the album. It's good to hear Eddie wail
again. He's a good singer but a better screamer.

                 slide

() (play the riff over the )
This progression seems reminiscent of Seek and Destroy by Metallica.

Bridge:

Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh:

Solo in minor pentatonic (10th fret box position)

Track 8 (Untitled) - I'm not going to bother right now. The drum beat's
cool though. Draws you in the way WMA's intro drum beat did, but too bad
they didn't use it on a real song.

For those of you DYING to play this, it's two notes. 9th fret and 7th fret
on the string.

Track 9 (MFC)

Solo over 4 bars of

solo over

Track 10 (Low Light)

 (descending bass line is )
 (same bass line thing)

Repeat verse and chorus
is just over

Track 11 (In Hiding)
IMHO, the best song on the album.

Too tired to tab out the pretty Zeppelin-esque sounding interlude.
I definitely will do this in the future, but this is just too much for one
sitting. The chords are basically:

Pre-chorus {The strumming pattern is just like STP. Kind of ironic how PJ
is borrowing from the band which was accused (wrongly, too, I might add) of
being a PJ-clone}:

Solo over verse progression

Pre-chorus

Track 12 (Push Me, Pull Me)

Track 13 (All Those Yesterdays)

+Verse:

          + +

                       +

(It's no crime to escape)

Solo in minor pentatonic (13th fret box pattern)

Track 13-2 (Hidden track)

This is a cool Indian sounding tune. I especially like the way they speed
up at the end, like a classical Indian raga. Anyway, I'll tab out a little
bit of it just to tease you guys:

All right, that's all folks. This ended up taking me longing than I was
hoping, but oh well. All in a night's work. Hopefully some of you out
there will find this useful. Some of this is pretty rough, but I really
just meant this to be a starting ground for other people to take and
improve by adding lyrics, solos, correcting errors, etc. Comments,
suggestions, and donations ($) gladly accepted.
